Everybody pooped in all the water, but it's cool

Perhaps the thing I rely on most that I understand the least is water treatment. Whatever happens at water treatment plants is a miracle. There is not a gross thing that wasn't recently present in our drinking water. A global map of water treatment plants would be a pretty good picture of development.

I'm conflicted about learning more about how this seemingly magical water cleaning works: will it make me lose my naive confidence in its complete efficacy? Or will it be like learning about the incidence of cosmic rays flipping bits in my iPhone and laptops, where the knowledge remains abstract rather emotional because it so so rarely has effects in daily life?
